Transportation Department
Here at KVUSD Transportation Department, we're proud of getting students to school safely each day. We make sure safety comes first in everything we do, and we try our best to keep our transportation standards high across the district.
What We Do
Our team is full of people who work hard to give friendly, secure transportation that fits what the KVUSD community needs. We know that students need to get to school on time if they're going to learn well.
Who We Serve
We take students to school each day if they live too far to walk:
- Kids in kindergarten to 3rd grade: if they live more than 3/4 mile away
- Kids in 4th to 8th grade: if they live more than 1 mile away
- High school students: if they live more than 2 miles away
Our Vehicles
We have 15 school buses that run on 9 routes to and from school. Our staff takes about 950 students to school every morning and back home in the afternoon.
Each year, our buses drive about:
- 150,000 miles just on regular school routes
- 44,000 more miles taking kids to field trips and sports events
We really care about connecting students with their schools safely, and making sure they get there ready to learn each day.
Assigned Bus Stop Location Form
This form must be filled out by a parent prior to the student riding the bus at the beginning of each school year, even if they have ridden previously. If you move please, fill out a new form. If you move or require an additional bus stop, please submit a new form. The assigned stops will be the only stops the student will be transported to/from. If a temporary alternative stop is needed (a day or two), a written note or a call to either the respective school office OR the Transportation Office is necessary before alternative arrangements will be made.
Once your form has been received and processed, your student will be routed and you will receive an email with their routing information including their bus stop times and locations and route numbers. We will also make them a bus pass and give it to the driver. Once you receive this email, your student can ride the bus.

Zpass System
All students riding the bus must have a bus pass. The bus pass is an RFID card that students scan when boarding and exiting the bus. This technology provides several important benefits:
- Real-time GPS location tracking of buses
- Accurate records of who is on each bus at any given time
- Documentation of where and when students board and exit
- Complete ridership data for safety and contact tracing purposes
- Enhanced ability to locate students who don't arrive at their expected destination
The transportation department frequently receives calls from parents searching for children who didn't arrive as planned. This system serves as a valuable tool for quickly locating students. The bus pass contains no personal information, so there are no privacy concerns if a card is lost.
Please remind your child to bring their bus pass every time they ride the bus. For younger students, we recommend attaching the pass to their backpack using the included retractable carabiner. Older students will receive a lanyard instead of a carabiner.
Field Trips and Sports Trips
Students are not required to have a bus pass for field trips or sports-related transportation.
Special Education Transportation
Students with IEPs that include transportation services (those who typically ride the smaller special education buses) do not need to take any additional action. While we will utilize the Zpass system for ridership tracking, drivers will maintain possession of the bus passes and scan them on behalf of students during boarding and exiting.
- Bus passes are required to ride the bus
- Students are responsible for keeping their bus pass in a safe location
- First pass is free. Replacement passes cost $5.00 if lost or destroyed (normal wear and tear replacements are provided at no charge)
- Lost or destroyed passes: Students may continue riding the bus for up to 2 days while waiting for a replacement. After 2 days, riding privileges will be suspended until a new pass is purchased. Contact your school office or the transportation department for replacements
- Forgotten passes: Students who forget their pass should notify the driver when boarding and will temporarily be allowed to ride. The first occurrence will result in a verbal warning. Repeated incidents may lead to suspension of bus riding privileges following the standard citation process
- Bus passes cannot be shared between student.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
When a student scans their bus pass, it connects with our routing system and logs when and where the scan occurred. This helps greatly in tracking down any students who don't show up at their expected location. It also connects with the tablets in the bus so the driver can identify if the student is getting on the right bus and off at the right stop.
Every student that rides the bus needs to have a bus pass. They must scan it every time they get on and off the bus.
Every student who has a completed School Bus Stop Assignment Form on file will receive a bus pass free of charge. Once we have processed the form, we will issue them a bus pass. Typically they will get their pass during the first or second week of school. If you purchased a replacement bus pass or just completed the form during the school year, the student will get the bus pass from the driver the next time they ride the bus.
No. The bus pass only contains a number. This number is assigned to a student in the routing system. If the pass is lost, there is no danger of a stranger obtaining personal information from the bus pass.
For the younger students, one of the best things we have found is using a retractable carabiner. The carabiner is clipped to their backpack and it allows them to pull the pass out to scan it.
For older students, carabiners and lanyards work well. Some students put the pass in their wallet. Some put it in their cell phone case between the phone and the case. As long as the case isn’t too thick, they will usually still scan. Basically any way to help them remember to bring it and not lose it.
We fully expect that students are going to forget them from time to time. No problem - just bring it the next day. The problem for us is when it becomes a constant issue and they just always forget it. In order for the system to work, (and provide that extra layer of protection), we need them to scan their bus pass every time they ride the bus. This can also be used as another way to help teach them responsibility.
The driver will send home a paper note to remind them and give them a couple of days to try to find it. During this time, we will still transport the student. If the student still can’t find it, then the driver will require them to purchase a new pass. If no replacement pass is obtained, riding privileges will be suspended. Replacement bus passes can be purchased for $5. They can be purchased from any school office, the bus driver or the transportation office.
