FCCLA — Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
FCCLA is a national student-led organization that empowers youth to become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and community issues. At Kelseyville High School, all culinary arts classes are fully integrated with FCCLA, making it an extension of classroom learning focused on personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation.
About FCCLA
FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is a national organization founded in 1945 that has grown to include over 220,000 members across nearly 7,000 chapters nationwide. Originally known as Future Homemakers of America (FHA), the organization changed its name in 1999 to better reflect its focus on leadership and career readiness in the modern world.
FCCLA is designed to be integrated into Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) classrooms, making it an intracurricular organization rather than a typical extracurricular club. The organization focuses on:
- Personal Growth
- Leadership Development
- Career Preparation
- Community Service
- Family as Central Focus
Leadership Roles and Officer Positions
FCCLA members compete in "Students Taking Action with Recognition" (STAR) events, which showcase proficiency in skills related to Family and Consumer Sciences. At Kelseyville High School, we participate in competitive events each year starting with regional competitions. Students who qualify advance to State Leadership Conference, and from there may qualify for the National Leadership Conference.
These are California-specific culinary competitions where KHS students have built a strong reputation:
- Culinary Display
- Appetizers
- Breads
- Creative Cakes
- Wedding Cakes
- Pastry & Confections
- Menu Planning and Table Display
- Salad Preparation
In addition to culinary-focused competitions, KHS students compete in a variety of STAR events that showcase diverse skills and interests:
- Baking and Pastry
- Culinary Arts
- Job Interview
- Chapter Service Project
- Event Management
- Entrepreneurship
- Food Innovations
- Nutrition & Wellness

Networking and Mentorship Opportunities
FCCLA provides outstanding opportunities for professional networking and mentorship. One of our previous officers is serving as an intern at the State Leadership Conference this year. At region, state, and national conferences, there are abundant opportunities to:
- Meet professionals working in the food service, hospitality, education, and culinary industries
- Learn about educational pathways in culinary arts and related fields
- Explore job opportunities and career possibilities
- Connect with student leaders and mentors from across the state and nation
Membership and Participation
There are no costs associated with being a member of FCCLA or holding a leadership position. However, traveling to state and national conferences does involve expenses for registration and travel.
FCCLA at KHS is committed to making these opportunities accessible to all students. To help offset these costs, our chapter participates in fundraising activities throughout the year, making it possible for more students to attend conferences and competitions.
